The True Meaning of Christmas… is LOVE!

by Dymond Starr

The true meaning of Christmas is LOVE. John 3:16-17 say that, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” The true meaning of Christmas is celebrating God’s incredible act of compassion and love towards His people. The real Christmas story is the story of God becoming a human in the person of Jesus Christ.

Well, you might ask why God did this. And the answer is because He loves us duhh! Then you might ask, well why was Christmas necessary? Why? Because we needed a Savior! Well, then why does God love us so much if we have done nothing for Him? The Bible says in 1 John 4:8 that, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

Then why do we celebrate Christmas each year?  We celebrate Christmas to thank God and show Him gratitude for what God did for us. We remember His birth by giving each one another gifts, worshipping Him and being especially attentive to the poor and less fortunate. The true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way—the only way—for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His one and only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full: He didn’t put a down payment on our sins, He didn’t put them on layaway and pay a fee for them once a month, He didn’t try to take out a loan on our sins, but He paid for them in full with His life as a gift to us.  And we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Roman 5:8).
