What I’m Looking Forward To in 2013 – March 2K13 Youthful Expression

Friday, March 1st, 2013

As the New Year starts to unravel, my goals for this year are beginning to arise. In most of my school classes, I am asked one question. What is my goal for the New Year? In each class, it is a different answer. I'm Looking Forward To 2013But I have yet to think about the overall answer that will fill up my academic, athletic and personal goals. I have individual goals that vary from each category but thinking about it overall, I need to set a goal that I can have carry me all the way throughout 2013.

My academic goal is to eventually get all A’s for at least one quarter. I have struggled with getting one or two B’s which then throw me off completely. My athletic goals are to push myself harder than I usually go. I would like to go the extra mile and exceed expectations just one step higher, i.e. varsity volleyball. Personal/spiritual goals are the type of goals that I believe shape all the other goals to actually happen. I have a personal goal of focusing and prioritizing more and a spiritual goal of drawing closer to God. If I achieve those goals, then my goal of getting all A’s and making varsity volleyball would most likely happen. That’s how they are all connected.  If you keep up with your personal and spiritual goals then all your other goals will fall into place.

A Step In The Right Direction for American Schools – March 2K12 Youthful Expression

Brown vs. the Board of Education:  A Step In The Right Direction for American Schools

by Sis. Tamika Alexander

Many people were part of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s. People like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, John F. Kennedy and many more. But, there is one person who helped make a step up for African Americans in schools, even though she was a little girl. Imagine you are a seven year old and have to walk one mile to a bus stop by walking through a railroad switching station and then waiting for a school bus to go to a "black elementary school" or a school where only African American children went. This is what happened to Linda Brown, an African American third grader from Topeka, Kansas, even though there was a "white elementary school" only seven blocks away. A "white elementary school" was a school where only white students were able to attend.

African Americans thought for this to happen everyday to a little girl was ridiculous, they had to do something about it. This sparked the Brown vs. Board of Education case. After three long years the case finally ended on May 17, 1954 with the court finding in favor of Linda Brown and the other African American children like her. The Supreme Court said that it was not fair to have black and white students separated in different schools. The judges voted on this case nine to zero. It took some states many years to put students together in schools and have them treated the same because many people were still prejudiced against Blacks.

If you were a seven-year-old African American girl in the 1950s, taking a step like this was very risky. But Linda Brown believed in herself; she took the chance to integrate schools and she won. This is not only important for Black History month but to me as well because this event gives young people the encouragement to be able to fulfill any dream that they have no matter how big or small. Another reason is because I go to a school that has mostly a white population. The change from it being all white to being diverse, was something seven-year old Linda Brown started.

Poems From Our Youth – October 2K11 Youthful Expressions

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Below are three poems written by Crystal McCown, Tamika Alexander and Asha King for the 2011 King & Queen Pageant.

Jesus Is The Light

Jesus Is The Light of the World

Jesus Is The Light
Jesus is the light of the world.

He will shine all the time.
He's like the sun of our day and the moon of our nights.

Jesus shines all the time no matter what.
Nobody can shine like He can.

So bless the name of Jesus Christ
Because Jesus is the light and the light will shine.

What Is Love?

Love

Love is something many people take for granted
Although it’s not something that is handed
Love is getting good grades in school
Even though school doesn’t rule

Love is going to church and enjoying yourself
Its where you become more self
Love is understanding the messages pastor is preaching
Knowing you are listening and believing

Love is knowing knowledge is an axe
And Wisdom is the edge
Love is god changing his direction
But never his promises

Love is when your soul may ache, and your heart can break
Your confidence can shake, but your life is never a mistake
Love is not knowing what your future is
But knowing who truly holds it

Love is having faith in God
Conscious of the wonders he can do
Love is appreciating God
For the blessings he bestows upon you

Love is Jesus being obedient to his father
As well as me being obedient to my mother
Love is Jesus dying on the cross for our sins
Just so everybody knows – Jesus wins

He's Always With You

He's Always With YouWalk upright he says
Do not walk as if the world is on your shoulders
You have too much to be happy for
Smile, everyday

Do you know why?

Because I’m always with you
I wake you up everyday and I lay you down to sleep
As long as you have faith in me, I will have faith in you
I’ll bring you out of the darkest point in your life, so you can see the light

Do you know why?

Because I’m always with you
I will teach you that it may get worse before it gets better
And I will bring you through the toughest weather
You just have to remember I am always with you

Shutout – July 2K11 Youthful Expression

Friday, July 1st, 2011

By Tamika Alexander

I recently finished the book Shutout by Brendan Halpin. It’s mostly about soccer, friendship and forgiveness. I usually don’t read books about soccer, but I decided to give it a try – and when I did I didn’t want to put down the book. I thought it was just so good!

Shutout was mainly about a 14 year old girl who loves soccer. She is a little self-conscious about herself because she is 5’ 10 in the 9th grade. She feels like she is out of place because of her height and she sometimes feels unwanted by how she is treated by others about her height and personality. But to always make her feel happy is her best friend who is her soccer buddy. They both wanted to make Varsity soccer, but only her friend did, and that made their friendship crumble.
