What I Am Thankful For – December 2K12 Youthful Expression

Saturday, December 1st, 2012
by Jeremiah Paxton

This time of the year is for giving thanks for the things you care about alot.  What I am most thankful for is my family.

My family is loving, caring, and understanding.  My family loves and takes care of me and they also are understanding about many things I talk about sometimes.  Not only do they care about school, but they also care about my video games, sports, and my confidence.

God gave me a very blessed family, and I thank him for that.  I'm blessed for having a good family.  Families are like your dog, because you care about them so much.

My Experience Playing Drums – September 2012 Youthful Expressions

Saturday, September 1st, 2012

By Deloris Pruitte

I honestly don’t know when I started playing drums, but I do know how I learned to play. I definitely wasn’t an overnight expert. I’m still not an expert. After playing around on the drums for a while, I started to like it. However, I was very anxious and nervous about playing. Once I started playing, I noticed people staring at me. And with me being very self-conscious about almost everything, I wouldn’t hit any symbols even though people kept telling me to do so. I was afraid that I would get off beat and the staring might become even worse.

My Experience Playing DrumsAfter a lot of crying and beating myself up about not playing as well as other drummers, my sister wrote me a note telling me that I needed to suck it up and play. In her opinion, a woman playing the drums will not get as much recognition unless she plays twice as well as the male musicians.

A couple of weeks later, my sister told John, Eryck, and I that we were going to the state choir rehearsal. As I sat in the pulpit, along with John, Eryck, and two of Bishop Thomas’ sons, Brother Rueben asked me to play for Bishop Thomas’ church. I said, “I don’t think so”, but he said “Yes, you’re going to play tonight.’’ Finally, I agreed and started to practice. Once again I became nervous when all of the others drummers started to watch me. I was so nervous that I said to my sister, “I can’t do this Delia! Please go get John, so he can play tonight.”

Being the encourager and protector that she is, she took me aside, where I burst in to tears out of embarrassment. I was very scared and didn’t want to play.  Then a young man offered to help me practice and I was grateful for that, but there was too much going on in my head at that moment. I needed to get my mind off of it. So when we all went to the hotel and got something to eat I tried my best to do just that. And all was well…until I got to church that night. Anxiety overtook me again and tears started to flow. Inside I said, “Suck it up, suck it up and get it over with.” After the song was over I quickly hopped off that seat and let Mark Thomas, Jr. get back on the drums. Even though I think I will never do that again, I still thank God for giving me that opportunity.

A Lot of People Love Easter – April 2K12 Youthful Expressions

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

by Brother John Mabry, III

A lot of people love Easter, but I believe that those people don’t even know the true meaning of Easter. When I was a young boy, I thought the true meaning was finding eggs and eating a whole bunch of candy to my pleasure.

Little did I know that after years and years, the true meaning of Easter was Jesus. At Holiness Tabernacle COGIC, we celebrate a week called Passion Week. The Passion Week consists of all the things that Jesus did before He died on the cross starting with Monday. On Monday, He cursed the fig tree and cleansed the temple. On Tuesday, Jesus spoke of many parables. On Wednesday, it is not found of what he did. On Thursday, a.k.a. Maundy Thursday, He gave the Passover and the Lord’s Supper. On Friday, on the day which he was betrayed, Jesus was arrested and crucified. Three days later, God raised Him from the dead.

You see Easter isn’t about candy, bunnies, and Easter baskets, because at the end of the day, all these materialistic things will pass away. That’s why Jesus came to fill us, give us life abundantly, and to show us the light. He died on the cross for all of our sins and if we believe in Him, He will save us from anything. Jesus went through all of this suffering and pain so that we will live without sin. A lot of people are probably asking why and I can answer that one – it’s because He loves us.

My Christmas Tradition – December 2K11 Youthful Expressions

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

by Deloris Pruitte

My Christmas tradition starts the day after Thanksgiving. I put up the tree and decorate it. Mom watches and my sisters and Dad decorate outside. Mom puts lights on the stair railings, and Delia makes desserts with Dad. We have two Christmas trees so you can tell we really like Christmas at our house, as all Christians should.

Around Christmas time we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. This is when we do 12 activities around the last few weeks before Christmas, but we usually only end up doing one activity because we are usually busy around that time.

On Christmas Eve we sing carols with our neighbors to people in our neighborhood. When we are done singing, we go over their house and have a party.

On Christmas Eve, after the party, we all go downstairs to the tree and we play Secret Santa. The next day we get up early and we all make breakfast. After we’re done we go to the tree upstairs and read the Bible story of when Jesus was born and then we pray. We also tell what we are grateful for. Then we open presents. I love Christmas!

I enjoyed going so you should try it out.

A Child Called It – March 2K11 Youthful Expressions

Book Review: A Child Called It
By Asha King

I am currently reading a book called A Child Called It, an autobiographical account by David Pelzer. It is about an abusive mother and how she mistreated her son, David. Although she had four children at the time, she treated David very awful. David was held back a grade purposely even though he was at the head of his class. David’s mother starved him for ten consecutive days, made him drink ammonia, lay on the stove, stabbed him and did other harsh things to make her son’s life miserable. While his mother turned to alcohol, David turned to the Lord. He prayed that his mother would stop, but she did not. He continued to put his faith in the Lord, but it decreased after a while because his mother showed no remorse. He started thinking that God hated him because of the life he had to live. Not only was his mother beating him until he was black and blue, but he was bullied at school.

The last chapter was called “The Lord’s Prayer”. David believed that there was no God. He started thinking he was alone in his struggle to survive. David began to give up on words like hope and faith, believing these words only existed in fairy tales. The last thing he did was clasp his hands together, bend his head and closed his eyes. He prayed with all his heart, and with peace in his heart, whispered “…and deliver me from evil. Amen.”

This book shows that no matter what you’re going through, God will help you through it. Though David was so young, he still turned to the Lord.

The Love I Have For Jesus – February 2K11 Youthful Expressions

The Love I Have For Jesus

The love of Jesus is like food to my heart
He is who I lean on when I need help
He gives me breath through my lungs
He is the heart of my soul
He is the light of my peacekeeping
He is the one who comforts me through my trials and tribulations
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil
I love Him because He saved me
I love Him because without Him I would be nothing
But I do have Him
And I do love Him for I am a child of God
