But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, in all Judea and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8). In the coming weeks, we will hear this verse quoted more frequently as we approach Pentecost – the day the Spirit of God fell on the disciples and the 120 early Christians who were tarrying for His arrival as Christ had commanded. Long before the Lord called me to start a ministry, He impressed upon me the great disadvantage the Church faced because the importance of the believer being filled with the Spirit was becoming less of a command and more of an option. Jesus first commanded the disciples to go back to Jerusalem and remain there until they received His Spirit. They were not to do anything before they received "…the other Comforter." Because they were obedient, the Lord sent His Spirit and filled the entire house. The empowered saints left that upper room and set about to turn the world upside down. In the early twentieth century (1906), Elder Charles Harrison Mason, while attending a revival in Los Angeles, California, was filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave utterance – just as it says in the scriptures. Already excommunicated from the Baptist Church, Elder Mason soon found himself distanced from his friend, Elder Charles Price Jones, who refused to accept the doctrine of being filled with the Holy Spirit. More than 100 years later, the Church Of God In Christ stands at the forefront of the Pentecostal movement in the world – all because one man, Bishop Mason, decided to seek the Lord for the "complete experience." For the next seven weeks at Holiness Tabernacle, we are going to do what Jesus commanded the disciples and all believers to do – wait or tarry for the filling of the Spirit. Each Sunday evening service has been designated as "Tarrying Service." In addition, we have also been led of God to go a little further and beginning Wednesday, April 14, Holiness Tabernacle will embark on a 40 day fast, all culminating on the Day of Pentecost, Sunday evening May 23. The Lord has spoken mighty things concerning our ministry. During the past several weeks we have seen tremendous growth numerically, financially and spiritually. However, we are not content. We know there is more God has called us to do. We are not satisfied with seeing the seats filled and acquiring property – we want the fullness of God! The Lord continues to impress upon me to encourage the saints to seek Him as He told the disciples and our founder, Bishop Mason. We long for the signs and wonders of the Church. We long for the type of anointing that causes evil spirits to flee. We seek after the power of God that causes men and women to change their lives of sin. We understand it takes a power greater than us (but available to every believer) to see God’s work being manifested through us. I invite you to join us during these tarrying services and days of fasting. We are contending for the faith that was once delivered unto the saints. Our theme for these next few weeks is, "I want it all!" Many are satisfied with a dance or an occasional touch. Some are satisfied with a nice song or a feel good sermon every now and then. We, however, want everything God has planned for us. We want the praise, the dance, the tongues, the wisdom, the fruit, the signs, the wonders, the gifts, the talents, the increase, but most of all we want the POWER of God in us. I bless you in the name of the Lord and remain your humble servant. The Passion of the ChristBy Pastor Eddie B Pruitte, Jr. A few years ago (2004 to be exact) this phrase was one of the most repeated in the country and most parts of the English speaking world. Actor Mel Gibson financed and directed a film depicting the last few hours of Jesus' life before the Crucifixion. The film grossed nearly $400 million domestically and was nominated for several awards. It was controversial for several reasons one being it was so graphic in its display of Christ's suffering. Here at Holiness Tabernacle we observe Passion Week (also known as Holy Week) and I place great emphasis on this for several reasons. I was asked by our editor to explain why. The word "passion" has several definitions (i.e. any powerful or compelling emotion; a feeling of strong love or hate; the sufferings of Christ on the cross or His sufferings subsequent to the Last Supper; the narrative of Christ's sufferings as recorded in the Gospels; the sufferings of a martyr). One of the reasons Mr. Gibson's film was so successful is because he made the Lord's experience real to the audience. This is exactly what the Scriptures tell us to do. The Lord told Moses to write down His laws and "rehearse them in Joshua's ears" (Ex. 17:14). He also told Moses to tell the people to write down His laws and acts, and teach them to the children. "Write the law on the doorposts, teach them as you sit in the house, as you walk along the way; write it upon the frontlets of their eyes" (Deut 6:7-9). This is something too many Christians have failed to do today. I marvel at the manner by which those of the Jewish and Moslem faiths are so "passionate" in their beliefs and their children accept their parent's faith at an early age. This is not an accident. Those parents take an active role in ensuring that their children are indoctrinated. They understand the importance of "training up a child when they are young." We Christians on the other hand, approach things a little differently. It never ceases to amaze me how many children whose parents are "saved" don't know the basic concept of salvation; books of the Bible; stories in the Bible; and sadly the story of Jesus’ sacrifice. The Lord has impressed upon me to do all I can to combat this ignorance. This week at Holiness Tabernacle we will do what the Bible tells us to do – remember Him. We will learn what Jesus did this week more than 2,000 years ago, to purchase our salvation. We will learn why He cursed the fig tree and the parables He told to foretell His death. We will learn how and why Holy Communion was instituted. We will attempt to make Christ's activities real to the saints. We do this because I believe what's important and real to us becomes real and important to our children. Some parents place emphasis on their children's athletic accomplishments, others are braggadocios about their children's academic achievements. I've even heard a parent comment that her daughter had a lot of boyfriends. I believe in the words of the song "…only what you do for Christ will last." Some may misinterpret what I am saying. I believe in supporting our children in wholesome, character building activities. However, nothing should replace or be more important than educating them in the teachings or ways of the Lord. Every parent should make it their personal goal to lead their child to Christ. Passion Week allows us to reflect, reconnect, and refocus on the most important events of our salvation. Jesus’ death and resurrection are what separates the Christian from every other faith. As a saint of God it is imperative not only that I am familiar with these events, but that they are real to me. If they are real to me, then they will become real to my children and their children, and as many that are afar off, and as many as the Lord shall call. Without question this should be the greatest week on the calendar for the Christian. Some will spend it on the beach, some will spend it in the mall, and some will spend it watching another sporting event. However, some will choose to spend it making the Lord's experience more real to them. Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009
A lagging economy wasn’t enough to keep Holiness Tabernacle Church Of God In Christ from providing holiday cheer for those in need this Thanksgiving season. The church provided more than 100 turkeys, November 21, on a first come, first serve basis to the Woodbridge Community. “This [turkey give away] means a lot,” said Elaine Duffie of Woodbridge. “A lot of families don’t have any money. To have the church make it possible for people to feed their families is a blessing from God.” Throngs of people filled the church parking lot as they waited for the give away to begin. “We gave over 70 turkeys away in 20 minutes,” said church founder and pastor, Eddie B Pruitte, Jr. Pastor Pruitte, who has been pasturing in the local community for more than 11 years, says this give away was a desire that God had placed on his heart for some time. “You can’t meet the spiritual needs of the community, if you don’t at first meet their physical needs,” Pastor Pruitte said. “Our vision is to be a community-based church that will meet the educational, social and financial needs of this community.” And that’s exactly what Michael May, Occoquan District Supervisor, wants to do as well May was on hand to meet and pass out turkeys to those less fortunate. “I was very impressed by the fact that the church was willing to reach out and help those in need,” May said. “Its up to the local government to partner with institutions like Holiness Tabernacle to fill in the gaps were needs are not being met.” The church also provided food baskets to families from neighboring schools. As lay-offs and foreclosures continue to occur, Holiness Tabernacle seeks to be the silver lining in an otherwise darkened economy.
