Students in Gar-Field High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program walk past two signs in their classroom everyday, one reads “Set the Example” and the other “Do the Right Thing”. It would appear that the message was received and implemented by the JROTC as the United States Marine Corps Training and Education command named Gar-Field a “Naval Honor School” for its achievements during the 2009-2010 school years. “This honor is another example of the wonderful things our students do at Gar-Field and I am very proud of the success of our students and instructors,” said Principal Bill Bixby. “Our cadets are very active in the community and have competed very successfully in the JROTC competitions and I am happy to see an external agency recognize them.”
Gar-Field’s program was selected as a Naval Honor school from among the 50 high schools in region 1 based on five categories: extracurricular activities, scholastic achievement, cadet citizenship, unit participation and unit inspection. At the end of every school year, Senior Marine instructor Major Bill Brannen, USMC (retired), is required to submit a detailed report to the Marine Corps that summarizes our yearly activities. The supervisors look at these reports from all the high schools in our region and select the top schools to be designated as Naval Honor Schools. Major Brannen, who runs the program along with Gunnery Sergeant Lester James, said the report details the activities and accomplishments of the cadets in the JROTC program from their participation in school organizations and sports to community service, physical fitness and academic honors. “One of the key areas in the review process is always unit participation, which include cadet enrollment,” said Brannen. “We have seen significant increase in the number of cadets in our program while many other schools are struggling to meet the required number. I think our numbers attracted attention from supervisors and may have helped push us over the top to receive the Naval Honor school designation.” The program has nearly doubled in size since Brannen began his position at Gar-Field five years ago with an average of 175 cadets registered a year. The latest count of cadets for this school year is 220, which is more than double the 100 cadet requirement to maintain the program at a school of Gar-Field’s size. I think our strong focus on the cadets and their accomplishments is a large reason for the increase in enrollment, they give us the opportunity to be involved on a larger scale not only in our school, but in the community and they highlight our success. When we enjoy what they are doing, we tell our friends and that is when we start to see new faces. A personal goal for Brannen was to increase female participation, since he felt many girls may have been scared away by the perceived military component, the reality is that the program is about leadership and character development. There are just as many opportunities for female cadets as there are for male cadets in the program. Half of the staff is female compared to the 2 to 1 male to female ratio when Brennan started the program. In fact, this year the commander of the program happens to be senior cadet Natasha Patterson, a female who has participated since her freshman year. Patterson says, “I have always been treated with a lot of respect in the program even though I am a female and they accommodate us females very well. I have never had any problems here and don’t know of anyone else who has either. The camaraderie and family structure of the program makes all the difference.”

This summer God really blessed my family. Every summer, my family goes on a long trip to different states to the International Auxiliaries In Ministry [AIM] Convention. This summer it was in Houston, Texas. While we were at the convention, God blessed us to have fun the whole week. Nobody got sick in my family, even though it was really hot. We went swimming everyday and nobody drowned. In addition, God also blessed us to spend some time with my Grandma from California. I believe this trip was a blessing for my family because not everyone’s family can go on big trips. Today, things cost so much money and people get discouraged. Dictionary.com says to be blessed means “to bestow good of any kind upon.” God really blessed my family. So, how do you get blessed? Read Deuteronomy 28. You have to listen to God and keep His commandments. If you do, you’ll be blessed. If you don’t, then you'll be cursed. I think I’ll listen to God because I like blessings, just like my summer blessing. Submitted by Back 2 School Supplies

by Asha King Vacation Bible School was a smashing success! With three days, I learned three different stories which were very important. VBS was broken into four different stations: Bible time, snack, arts and crafts and play.
p>On the first day we learned about gratitude. We were given a memory verse which came from Psalm 25: 4-5, Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. What is gratitude? The meaning in the dictionary is: the quality of being thankful. In other words gratitude means being grateful and appreciative. To me gratitude is having the right attitude. Our topic for the second day was compassion. The dictionary says compassion means concern for the suffering or misfortunes of others. But having true compassion is all about love and kindness in action. Our Bible story was the parable of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:30-37. The story was about a man who was robbed and left by the wayside. A priest who should have helped him didn’t and a Levite came by and didn’t help either. But a Samaritan, the least likely of the three to help, was full of compassion and helped him. The Samaritan cleaned him up, took him to the inn, and paid the innkeeper to take care of him saying, “Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.” The last night we discussed forgiveness. The meaning of forgiveness is to pardon, have mercy, and clemency among other things. It is much easier to forgive someone than it is to forget. But, obeying and following the Bible should make it easier for us to both forgive and forget. Do you really know who Jesus is? If you did, you would know He wants us to exhibit all these characteristics – gratitude, compassion and forgiveness – and so much more. VBS 2011

Wednesday, August 10 – Friday, August 12 On Main Street, kids will be drawn into stories Jesus told about everyday people in everyday situations. But His stories were anything but ordinary! Jesus turned lives upside down and hearts inside out through parables that challenged people to look at themselves and others in new and unexpected ways. So come join us on Main Street for an inside-out, upside-down experience like no other…and let Jesus make a difference in YOU! Shutout – July 2K11 Youthful Expression
Friday, July 1st, 2011
I recently finished the book Shutout by Brendan Halpin. It’s mostly about soccer, friendship and forgiveness. I usually don’t read books about soccer, but I decided to give it a try – and when I did I didn’t want to put down the book. I thought it was just so good! Shutout was mainly about a 14 year old girl who loves soccer. She is a little self-conscious about herself because she is 5’ 10 in the 9th grade. She feels like she is out of place because of her height and she sometimes feels unwanted by how she is treated by others about her height and personality. But to always make her feel happy is her best friend who is her soccer buddy. They both wanted to make Varsity soccer, but only her friend did, and that made their friendship crumble. Don’t Quit! Keep Going! – June 2K11 Youthful Expressions

By Brother Eryck McCown
Obstacles will come and try to stop you from succeeding. When they do, don’t give up, keep going. If Jackie Robinson gave up when he was playing baseball, African American may have never been able to play baseball in the same league with others. But he didn’t. That’s why African Americans can play in baseball in the same league and on the same league as others. If the United States would have given up in World War II, the United States would be a communist country lead by a fascists dictator that would not care for anyone. But it didn’t. That’s why we are a democratic and capitalist country. When you give up, you are showing that you are weak and can’t go on. If you give up you won’t succeed in what you are trying to do. Keep moving forward and don’t look back. |

What: Annual Hallowed One’s Day Carnival

Your confidence can shake, but your life is never a mistake
Walk upright he says
I have a very big family, so it was going to cost a lot of money. God blessed us with enough money to go on that trip. He also blessed us to drive 23 hours to Texas and back with no accidents and not run out of gas.
What kinds of schools supplies do you usually need to buy before the start of a new academic year (e.g., pen, pencils, laptop or desktop computers, PDA, calculators)?
Vacation Bible School 2011:
By Tamika Alexander
Don’t give up. Things may not be going your way but… don’t give up. A famous basketball player (Michael Jordan) once said, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael kept trying and trying again. Sometimes he failed and sometimes he succeeded. He learned from his mistakes. He kept trying and trying and never gave up.
